SPRINGFIELD, Mass. (November 10, 2025) – The Western New England women's basketball team fell on home court on Monday night to the Anchorwomen of Rhode Island College by a final score of 52-43, avenging last year's defeat to WNE, coming away with a big third-quarter to drop the Golden Bears.
Records:
- Western New England: 1-1
- Rhode Island College: 1-0
How it Happened:
First Quarter:
- The Golden Bears did not hold a lead on Monday afternoon as Rhode Island College picked up the first points of the game and never looked back. RIC had six of the first seven points of the game overall before Lottia Barnes had WNE's first field goal of the night, over halfway through the opening quarter.
- WNE struggled from the field all night long, and the first quarter was no exception, seeing the Golden Bears pick up just three made field goals and seven points overall to trail 13-7 at the end of the first quarter. Megan Schuermann led Rhode Island College right from the get-go and finished the quarter strong.
- Both teams made just three field goals in the frame, but RIC went to the line six times and made all six free throws.
Second Quarter:
- Looking for a spark, the Golden Bears scored the first field goal of the quarter with Barnes continuing to impress with a jumper to put WNE down by four, 13-9. Schuermann then scored a quick four points for the Anchorwomen, followed by a Sophie Hedge bucket as the team exchanged points on the run.
- The Golden Bears picked up a three-pointer from Erin Reen with 3:36 to play in the quarter, followed by another made basket from Hedge, putting the Golden Bears down three, 21-18, but a quick three from RIC's Abby Wagner stopped WNE's small run. Wager had the final six points in the final quarter to put the Anchorwomen ahead 27-20 at the half.
- WNE doubled their field goal totals from the first quarter in the second, making six, but shot just 1/7 from distance. RIC made five field goals, two triples, and a pair of free throws.
Third Quarter:
- The Anchorwomen used an 11-2 run to begin the second half to start to pull away from the Golden Bears, leading by double-digits for the first time all night. Abby Wager and Megan Schuermann led RIC on their run, seeing the visitors lead 38-22 with 5:22 to play in the quarter.
- The Golden Bears scored just eight points in the third, while Rhode Island College had 15. Develyn McDonald led Western New England with four points, as WNE trailed by 14 heading into the fourth quarter, 42-28.
Fourth Quarter:
- McDonald and Sarah West had the first four Western New England points of the fourth quarter to drop RIC's lead to ten before Schuermann scored a layup, plus a foul shot, and then a three-pointer to grow Rhode Island College's lead back up to 14 with 3:37 remaining.
- The Golden Bears still had fight left in them as Paige Winter hit a three and Lottia Barnes a pair of free throws while Katie Regan got on the scoreboard with 41 seconds remaining in the game, seeing WNE trail 50-43, but time was not in Western New England's favor as Schuermann scored the last point of the night for RIC, finishing with 24 of RIC's 52 points to lead the visitors to a 52-43 win over the Golden Bears.
Inside the Lines:
- Sophie Hedge had her first double-double of her career on Monday, scoring 11 points while pulling down 12 rebounds, six on each end of the floor. Hedge also had two steals for the Golden Bears.
- Every player who played for WNE contributed on the scoreboard, but it was not enough to defeat the Anchorwomen, who saw Megan Schuermann shoot 8/14 from the field and 7/8 from the free-throw line to finish the night with 24 points. Abby Wager picked up 12 points, five rebounds, and three steals for RIC.
- WNE shot 27% from the field and was just 3/24 from distance in the loss. The Golden Bears got to the free-throw line just eight times compared to RIC's 20.
- The Golden Bears drop their second of three meetings against RIC in program history. Last season's win came on the road, against the then 20th-ranked Anchorwomen.
