SPRINGFIELD, Mass. (September 10, 2025) – The men's soccer team played their first home game since August 31 on Wednesday. They hosted the number 21-ranked Wheaton College on Suprenant Field. Ben Riley would gift WNE a 1-0 lead in the 55th minute of the contest, but Wheaton would add two goals after that to sink WNE 2-1.

How it Happened:
First Half:
- Braylon Casinghino started in net for WNE as they welcomed the Lyons and their keeper, Michael O'Gara.
- The first half saw the teams battle back and forth, with both teams having major goal-scoring chances.
- Owen Kane had the first major chance for the Lyons as he got past the keeper but sent the shot wide of the net in the 2nd minute.
- Declan Rhatigan had the first shot on goal, saved by Casinghino in the 19th minute.
- In the 24th minute, Wheaton was awarded a penalty kick, but the penalty kick taker sent their shot off the left post, and the score stayed at 0-0.
- Jayden Montagna had a prime opportunity with a shot towards the bottom-left corner of the goal, but O'Gara saved it.
- Both teams had one more shot on goal during the rest of the first half, but the goalies stood strong, and the score was knotted at zero after the first half.
- The Lyons had more shots, 8-3, and corner kicks, 2-1. WNE had more fouls, 6-4, and both teams had two shots on goal and two saves.
Second Half:
- WNE started the second half with pressure, which led to multiple chances.
- The top chance came in the 55th minute when Tyler Lewis made a move past a defender and fed Ben Riley a pass, which Riley sent sliding into the bottom right corner of the goal for WNE's first home goal. WNE led 1-0.
- Almost five minutes later, Gael Vera found Aidan Doyle, who found the back of the net with a right-footed shot. The game was tied 1-1.
- The teams traded chances with Wheaton getting two shots and WNE having two corners, but neither team capitalized.
- As the game looked to be heading towards a tie, Charlie Cushing tapped the ball to Caleb Cassetta-Waxman, who scored. WNE trailed 2-1.
- WNE tested O'Gara in goal after that, but O'Gara was equal to the task.
- In the 81st minute, all signs pointed to a WNE goal as they had a shot saved, leading to a rebound shot, which got blocked by a Wheaton defender. WNE had one more shot chance, but it was saved once again by O'Gara.
- That was the last major chance for WNE. Wheaton had a chance to extend the lead with fourteen seconds left, but Casinghino made the save.
- WNE lost to Wheaton 2-1.

- Wheaton defeated WNE 2-1 on Wednesday afternoon.
- After no goals were scored in the first half, both teams made halftime changes, and three goals were scored in the second half.
- Ben Riley scored in the 55th minute off an assist from Tyler Lewis.
- Aidan Doyle then scored the equalizer for Wheaton in the 60th minute. Gael Vera assisted the goal.
- Caleb Cassetta-Waxman then scored in the 74th minute to give Wheaton a 2-1 lead. Charlie Cushing was credited with the assist.
- The final stats saw Wheaton lead in shots 17-11, saves 7-4, and fouls 13-10. WNE faced more shots, 17-11, and had more shots on goal, 8-6. Both teams had four corners during the contest.
