Men’s Soccer Unable To Find First Goal Of 2025, Drop 3-0 Contest At Wesleyan

MIDDLETOWN, Conn. (September 3, 2025) – The Western New England men's soccer team is still snake bitten for a goal following their third match of the season which resulted in a 3-0 loss on the road at Wesleyan University on Wednesday evening. The Golden Bears fall to 0-3 to start the season while Wesleyan climbs to 1-0, beginning their campaign on Jackson Field.

Records:
  • Western New England: 0-3
  • Wesleyan University: 0-1
How it Happened:

First Half
  • Braylon Casinghino made the start between the pipes for the Golden Bears and would come up with two early saves to keep the Cardinals off the scoreboard. Wesleyan would come up with their first, and only, tally of the opening half in the 20th minute when Joshwin Jennings found the back of the cage on an assist from Yousuf Saeed, giving Wesleyan the opening 1-0 lead.
  • Casinghino continued his strong play in net with a pair of saves following, but the WNE offense would be slowed by the Cardinals. The first shot on goal for WNE came in the 28th minute when Tyler Lewis forced Mathis Blanc to come up with a save, keeping WNE from scoring.
  • The final five minutes saw Western New England and Wesleyan take a shot on goal each, but neither would find the back of the net as Wesleyan came up with a 1-0 lead after the opening half. The Cardinals outshot Western New England 12-5 overall in the half, with Casinghino making five saves overall.
Second Half:
  • Wesleyan wasted little time getting on the scoreboard in the second half, needing just four minutes to find goal as Saeed was on the score sheet again, finding his first goal of the season and second overall point of the game to give the Cardinals a 2-0 lead. WNE would respond with the next two shots on goal, one from Lewis and another from Shay O'Neil, but would have no goals to show for it.
  • Wesleyan iced the game with its third tally of the night when Yousuf Saeed capped off a three-point night with two goals and an assist, leading the Cardinals to a 3-0 victory over the Golden Bears.
  • WNE outshot Wesleyan 8-6 in the final 45 minutes, but four saves from Mathis Blanc in the half would keep another clean sheet on Western New England, who is still looking for their first goal of the season, falling to 0-3 on the year.
Coach's Corner:
Head coach Devin O'Neill spoke after the contest about his thoughts on the 3-0 defeat. "Proud of our effort and parts of our performance were quite good. Hard to concede 3 goals but there are signs of progress," O'Neill stated.
Inside the Lines:
  • Tyler Lewis led WNE with four shots on goal in the game, playing all 90 minutes, but could not find the back of the net after scoring ten goals a season ago.
  • Braylon Casinghino came up with six saves while surrendering three goals in the 90-minute effort.
  • Yousuf Saeed led Wesleyan with a pair of goals and an assist on the night.
