WATERVILLE, Maine (September 7, 2025) - The Western New England men's soccer team came up with their first win of the season over the Terriers of Thomas College by final score of 2-0. Jayden Montagna and Cole Casinghino had the goals for the Golden Bears, both coming in the second half, lifting WNE to its first win of the season.

How It Happened:
First Half:
- Miles Lanier made the start for WNE, his first start of the season and second overall appearance. It would be WNE who picked up the first shot of the game as Shay O'Neill firing a shot on goal, handled by Jamie Fischer, who made the start between the pipes for the Terriers. The first five total shots of the opening half belonged to the Golden Bears as WNE looked to find the back of the net for the first time this season.
- Thomas wouldn't see its first shot get near the posts until the 32nd minute but the shot would not be on goal as Lanier would not be forced into any saves in the opening 45 minutes.
- Jack Leland had the best chance as goal for WNE to close the first half, getting a shot on goal following a good corner kick but the Golden Bears continued to be snake-bitten and would be held scoreless for the seventh consecutive half to begin the year.
Second Half:
- Just 51 seconds into the second half, Owen Dieterle rushed towards goal and had a chance to get WNE on the board but the Terriers' Fischer denied the chance, holding WNE off the scoreboard. Thomas would begin finding their offensive foot, picking up two quick shots but would not find a shot on goal.
- Just before the 60th minute of the game, the Terriers came up with their first shot on goal, handled by Lanier. The Golden Bears would finally find the back of the net in the 69th minute as Jayden Montagna buried a rebound chance at the near post, picking up the first goal of the season for WNE, giving the team a 1-0 lead.
- The Golden Bears were not done scoring there, finding the back of the net ten minutes later as Cole Casinghino would find twine in the 79th minute, giving WNE a 2-0 lead. In between the two goals for the Golden Bears, Miles Lanier would make another save to keep Thomas from evening the score.
- In the late stages of the game, Thomas would scramble, looking for a goal to get back into the contest but would not be able to come up with a goal as the Golden Bears would come up with a 2-0 victory, their first of the season.
Inside The Lines:
- Jayden Montagna got the scoring started for WNE, collecting his first and the teams first goal of the season, his seventh career goal overall.
- Cole Casinghino found twine for the first time in his collegiate career, which extended WNE's lead to 2-0.
- Miles Lanier ended the afternoon with three saves.
- WNE outshot Thomas 19-11 in the game overall and 13-3 on goal.
- This afternoon's game marked the first career meeting between the two teams all-time.
