Game Recap: Men's Ice Hockey |

Men’s Ice Hockey Unable To Complete Weekend Sweep, Falls 2-1 At Roger Williams

FALL RIVER, Mass. (January 17, 2026) – After a thrilling overtime victory on Friday night, the Western New England men's ice hockey team saw the hosting Hawks of Roger Williams University flip the script and take a 2-1 win over the Golden Bears on Saturday night.

Records:
  • Western New England: 4-12-0, 2-9-0 CNE
  • Roger Williams University: 6-11-0, 4-7-0 CNE
How it Happened:

First Period:
  • Everest Schnider opened the first period with a shot that hit the iron as the Golden Bears nearly opened the game with a quick goal. Luca Scaglione made the start for the Golden Bears on Saturday, making three early saves in the opening three minutes to keep the Hawks from soaring on home ice. Scaglione had seven saves in the opening 5:25 of the opening period, helping the Golden Bears early.
  • Mathew Fortin found the back of the net on a power play goal for his first goal of the season, which gave the Blue and Gold the opening 1-0 lead at the 9:17 mark of the period. From there, the Golden Bears tested Jacob Jaslow once more before the midway point of the period, but could not add to their lead.
  • Down the stretch, RWU picked up a pair of power plays, but could not beat Scaglione and the WNE defense. Scaglione made 13 saves in the opening period while Western New England put up six shots on goal, with Fortin's goal the lone goal of the period, giving the Golden Bears a 1-0 advantage after 20 minutes of play.
Second Period:
  • It took the Hawks 57 seconds to find the back of the net in the second period when Daxton St. Hilarie beat Scaglione on the power play on an assist from PJ Sweeney and Aidan Radic, evening the score at one. The two teams exchanged chances following the goal as the game moved towards the midway point of the period. Roger Williams had the better of the chances, sending multiple shots on Scaglione, but the sophomore came up big between the pipes.
  • With 9:12 remaining in the period, RWU got on the board again as TJ Sullivan scored his sixth of the season on assists from PJ Sweeney and Bo Clark, giving the Hawks their first lead of the game. Roger Williams held the puck for the majority of the final five minutes of the second period as the Golden Bears could not generate much offense. Scaglione made 21 saves in the second period while WNE put together ten shots on goal, all saved by Jaslow.
Third Period:
  • Michael Bottrell, Beau Helmeczi, and Kyle Walker tested RWU in the early goings of the third period but could not score. WNE picked up a power play chance at the 6:38 mark of the period and had a five-on-three for 1:56 that saw the power play produce five shots on goal, but Jaslow made every save for the Hawks to keep the Golden Bears off the scoreboard.
  • Western New England continued to test the RWU goalkeeper as the game headed into the final stages of the third period, but Jaslow continued to stay strong for the Hawks. The Golden Bears took just one shot on goal in the final five minutes of the game, not enough to beat the Hawks, as Roger Williams took a 2-1 victory on Saturday.
Inside the Lines:
  • Mathew Fortin had the opening goal of the game, the lone WNE goal overall. Fortin finds the back of the net for the first time this season.
  • Luca Scaglione totaled 44 saves in the loss on Saturday, allowing just two goals.
  • Western New England was outshot 46-31 in the contest.
  • Jacob Jaslow made 30 saves, half coming in the third period for RWU.
Up Next on the Schedule:
  • The Golden Bears return to the ice next Friday, January 23 at 7:00 PM, heading to Curry College for more Conference of New England action.
