Curry Tests WNE Goalkeeping With 68 Shots, Golden Bears Fall Short, 3-1 In CNE Action

Box Score MILTON, Mass. (January 23, 2026) – The Western New England men's ice hockey team was tested defensively on Friday night, giving up 68 total shots to the hosting Colonels of Curry College, but stood tall, only surrendering three goals in a 3-1 loss from The Canton Ice House.

Records:
  • Western New England: 4-13-0, 2-10-0 CNE
  • No. 11 Curry College: 12-5-0, 9-3-0 CNE
How it Happened:

First Period:
  • The Golden Bears struggled to find offense in the first period overall as Curry dominated the opening frame with much of the offensive attack. The Colonels had the opening goal of the game after Western New England starting goalkeeper Nikita Volsky made nine saves in the opening five minutes, but Manny Cabral found the back of the net to give Curry the 1-0 lead on assists from Gage Dill and Mason Kesselring, opening the score for the home team.
  • Western New England had just one official shot through the midway point of the period, as Camille Marcoux's shot, which was blocked just eight seconds into the period, was the only offensive threat the Golden Bears held onto. Kyle Garland had the first shot on goal for the Golden Bears at the 12:18 mark of the period, with Thomas Heaney making the save for the Colonels. Western New England scored their first of the night with five minutes remaining in the frame when Mathew Fortin fired home his second of the season on assists from Billy VanSumeren and Kai Skilbeck, evening the score at one. Fortin picked up a breakaway pass from VanSumeren and found twine on the goal.
  • Curry rebounded in just under two minutes, scoring their second of the night, and second from Cabral, who picked up a power play goal for his ninth of the season, giving the Colonels a 2-1 lead, which ended the opening period. Volsky made 29 saves in the opening period, a single-period high for the first-year goalkeeper, keeping Western New England in the game. WNE took just two shots on goal, one finding the twine.
Second Period:
  • Luca Scaglione replaced Volsky to begin the second period of play and made an opening save to help the Golden Bears kill off a penalty in the first minute of the frame. Western New England had three shots, two on goal, in the opening 1:17 of the second period with Gavin Mastrodonato and Matthew Dougherty generating offensive opportunities for WNE. Despite the chances, Western New England suffered another penalty just five minutes into the period, going back on the penalty kill. The penalty killers for the Golden Bears were tested, as was their goalkeeper, as Scaglione made seven saves on the Curry chance, as Curry was up to 44 shots in the game. After the penalty kill, the Golden Bears picked up their first power play of the game.
  • Western New England had one shot on the power play when Everest Schneider had his chance denied at the net. Curry continued their offensive attack but couldn't find the back of the net as Scaglione continued to come up big for the Golden Bears between the pipes. The Colonels had a pair of late power plays in the second period, generating just three shots over the four minutes, staying off the scoreboard in the second frame as the game moved to 2-1 heading into the final 20 minutes of action.
  • Luca Scaglione made 21 saves on 21 shots on goal in the second period, while Western New England put up four shots in the second period, all saved by Heaney.
Third Period:
  • The WNE penalty kill continued to be dominant, stuffing another Curry odd-man advantage in the third period as Scaglione made a pair of saves while the Golden Bears kept the Colonels from any dangerous chances. Curry was able to strike just after the penalty kill by the Golden Bears to extend their lead when Nicolas Laviviere found twine for the first time this season from Tyler Isherwood and Jett Otwell, giving the Colonels a 3-1 advantage.
  • At the midway point of the third period, the Golden Bears picked up a power play chance, which generated one shot on goal from Beau Helmeczi. Western New England pressed on offense in the final half of the period, taking three shots on goal, but could not find the back of the net any more times in the game, falling to Curry by a final score of 3-1.
  Inside the Lines:
  • Curry put up 68 shots on goal on Friday night, keeping Nikita Volsky and Luca Scaglione busy between the pipes. Volsky made 29 saves in 20 minutes of action, while Scaglione made 36 saves over the final 40 minutes of the game.
  • Mathew Fortin had Western New England's lone goal of the game, his second of the season. Billy VanSumeren and Kai Skilbeck had the assists for WNE.
  • Manny Cabral led Curry with a pair of goals in the win.
  • Curry went 44/71 in the faceoff circle.
  • The Western New England penalty kill killed off seven of eight Curry advantages in the game. WNE went 0/2 on the advantage.
