Men’s Ice Hockey Drops CNE Contest At Suffolk

EAST BOSTON, Mass. (February 14, 2026) – The Western New England men's ice hockey team dropped a Conference of New England contest on the road on Saturday night to the Rams of Suffolk University, as the Rams sweep the weekend home-and-home after tonight's 9-1 victory.

Records:
  • Western New England: 5-19-0, 3-16-0 CNE
  • Suffolk University: 15-7-1, 14-3-1 CNE
How it Happened:

First Period:
  • Similar to last night's action, the Rams out shot Western New England heavily, but the Golden Bears were able to stay in the game after the opening 20 minutes of action. Mathew Fortin had the opening shot for the Golden Bears just 1:17 into the opening period after Lochlan Lauer, who made the start for the Golden Bears, already faced four shots, two on goal. Lauer picked up seven saves in the opening five minutes of the game before Suffolk scored its first goal of the game when Nolan Leonard found the back of the net on the power play for his seventh goal of the season, giving the Rams a 1-0 lead.
  • Western New England fought back just two minutes later when Beau Helmeczi scored for the second time this season, a goal assisted by Gavin Mastrodonato, Helmeczi's second of the season, bringing the game back to even at the 7:50 mark of the period. The Golden Bears were assessed a five-minute major penalty, which kick-started another goal for the Rams on the power play as Daniel McKiernan picked up his 12th of the season for the Rams to give Suffolk back the lead with nine minutes to play in the period.
  • The Golden Bears continued to battle the Rams in the period, seeing Suffolk take plenty of shots on goal, with Lauer keeping his squad in the game. Lauer made 21 saves on 23 Suffolk shots in the opening period. WNE picked up just four shots on goal in the opening 20 minutes.
Second Period:
  • Suffolk capitalized on its third power play goal of the game, coming just 2:45 into the second period when Ryan Webb found the back of the net to put Suffolk ahead 3-1. Following the Suffolk goal, Western New England found some offensive footing as Spencer Clark and Everest Schneider came away with a shot each, with Suffolk's Austin McNicholas coming away with saves.
  • With 12 minutes to play in the period, the Rams added to their lead when Quinn Booth scored for the second time this season, giving the hoss a 4-1 advantage. Less than 30 seconds later, Suffolk's Aidan O'Connell added to the Rams' lead, his 12th of the season, putting Suffolk ahead 5-1. The Rams continued the onslaught in the period when Alex Ondos added another Suffolk goal just 1:20 later to make it 6-1 in favor of the Rams.
  • The Golden Bears picked up just two shots on goal through the opening 11 minutes of the second period. A power play for WNE produced sustained pressure as the Golden Bears picked up five shots, two on goal, both turned away by McNicholas. Following the penalty kill, Suffolk added another goal when Matthew Pimental picked up his second of the season and second in the last two games over WNE. Suffolk exited the second period with a commanding 9-1 lead after their seventh goal of the period.
Third Period:
  • With the game virtually out of reach for the Golden Bears, Suffolk added one final goal in the third period to make it a 10-1 rout. Aidan O'Connell picked up his 13th of the season to add to Suffolk's lead.
  • Lochlan Lauer made 14 of 15 saves in the period.
Inside the Lines:
  • Beau Helmeczi recorded his second goal of the season for Western New England in the opening period of the game. Gavin Mastrodonato had the lone assist on the goal.
  • Suffolk took 57 shots while Lochlan Lauer came up with 47 saves.
  • Suffolk went 3/6 on the power play in the game.
