Baseball Drops Fourth Straight After Amherst Hits Go-Ahead Home Run In The Eighth Inning

AMHERST, Mass. (March 25, 2026) – The Western New England baseball team held one of the top offenses at bay on Wednesday night from Memorial Field, but it was not enough as the Mammoths of Amherst College battled back from 4-1 down and hit an eighth-inning home run that saw the home team come away with a 5-4 victory over the Golden Bears.

Records:
  • Western New England: 7-8
  • Amherst College: 10-2
How it Happened:

First Inning:
  • Mark Zigmont and Noah Schermerhorn led the game off with a pair of hits, but the Golden Bears were not able to do anything with the runners on base.
  • Amherst opened the scoring in the bottom of the first inning, as Aiden Bisaillon made his first career collegiate start and induced a ground ball with a pair of runners on to get two outs, but the Mammoths would score, giving the hosts a 1-0 lead.
Second Inning:
  • WNE bounced back in the top of the second, seeing Tyler Waterbury walking and advancing twice on a pair of Amherst wild pitches. Andrew Florek would pick up an RBI on a groundout to score Waterbury, evening the score at one.
Fourth Inning:
  • A big top of the fourth inning saw Western New England collect four hits and three runs to take their first lead of the afternoon. Leo Paragarino led off with a single, while Corey Kilroy took a free base on a hit by pitch, putting two runners on quickly. Zach Drewry delivered on a full count with an RBI single, giving WNE a 2-1 lead. Andrew Florek had his first hit of the afternoon to load the bases before Brody Enos collected his first career hit and RBI, adding to the WNE lead and keeping the bases loaded. Jack Gamache took a bases-loaded walk to score another run for Western New England run, giving WNE a 4-1 lead after the top of the fourth inning.
  • In the bottom of the frame, Amherst answered with one run, coming up with a groundout that produced the run. WNE led 4-2 after four innings.
Sixth Inning:
  • Todd Grammatico gave up one run in the bottom of the sixth inning, seeing another RBI groundout produce a run for the Mammoths, who got back within one with nine outs to play with. JJ Grimes singled and eventually scored for the Mammoths, seeing the Golden Bears cling onto a 4-3 lead after six innings.
Seventh Inning:
  • Amherst left two runners in scoring position in the bottom of the seventh inning as Jaret Sarrantonio escaped a leadoff single and walk, picking up a strikeout and getting a flyout and groundout to end the inning.
Eighth Inning:
  • Western New England left a pair of runners on base in the top of the eighth inning, seeing Tyler Waterbury and Andrew Florek walk, but WNE couldn't string together any hits in the inning, still holding the 4-3 lead.
  • Kyle Welsh pitched the eighth inning for Western New England, seeing Amherst's Carson Ames pick up a one-out single before Leo Foust launched a two-run home run to left field with two outs, flipping the script, giving Amherst a 5-4 lead, putting Western New England's backs against the wall.
Ninth Inning:
  • Western New England threatened in the ninth. Antonio Galizia picked up a pinch hit single, followed by an error that allowed Leo Paragarino to reach, and Corey Kilroy took a four pitch walk, all with one out, loading the bases. A fielder's choice that got an out at the plate and a groundout to end the game sunk the Golden Bears to their fourth straight loss, dropping the contest 5-4.
Inside the Lines: Up Next on the Schedule:
  • The Golden Bears look to end their four-game skid with a pair of Conference of New England contests on Saturday, March 28, at 2:00 and 5:00 PM at Wentworth Institute of Technology.
