SPRINGFIELD, Mass. (March 28, 2026) – The Nor'Easters of the University of New England visited the Golden Bears on Saturday for a conference showdown. A showdown that was very low scoring early and saw UNE take a 3-2 lead into halftime thanks to Stephen and Shea Fogarty, who scored or assisted on each first-half goal for the Nor'Easters. The third would not go WNE's way, but the fourth saw the home squad score five goals in 2:17 to take a 10-7 lead that would not be extinguished. WNE won the conference contest 10-8 in the end.
Records:
Western New England: 5-5 (2-0)
University of New England: 3-7 (0-2)
How it Happened:
First Quarter:
- Chris Catuosco continued his excellence from the faceoff spot to get the contest started. However, neither team could find the net until almost ten minutes into the game. Both teams drew penalties but could not convert early.
- Logan Jenkins would break the scoring open with a goal assisted by Jacob Roy. Stephen Fogarty then answered for UNE before Jenkins scored again just under a minute later. Thomas Labbe had the assist on this goal. WNE led 2-1.
- That scoreline held through the first and into the intermission. WNE only held a one-goal lead but outshot UNE (13-3), had more shots on goal (4-1), more faceoff wins (4-0), more ground balls (9-8), and was more accurate in their clears (2-2, 4-5). UNE had more saves (2-0).
Second Quarter:
- The majority of the second quarter was played with neither team able to score. Both teams sent shot after shot at the goal and around the goal. However, neither team could break through.
- However, with 1:23 left in the first half, Preston Briggs found the netting, tying the contest for UNE. Shea Fogarty assisted the goal. Then, after an Ean LaRochelle faceoff win, Shea Fogarty scored, and UNE had the 3-2 lead with 0:52 left in the first half.
- The Golden Bears would earn the ball after the goal and call a timeout. However, the team could not score, and WNE trailed 3-2 at halftime. The halftime stats saw WNE leading in almost every category. WNE had more shots (23-12), shots on goal (10-5), ground balls (17-16), and faceoff wins (6-1). UNE had more saves (8-2) and caused turnovers (6-4).
Third Quarter:
- Jacob Roy would get the Golden Bears started in the third with a goal assisted by Max Rudgers. WNE was tied 1:04 into the second half. However, the Nor'Easters stormed to a three-goal lead after that, thanks to Shea Fogarty scoring the two goals and Declan Mulkerin scoring the third of that run.
- Down 6-3, Chris Catuosco won the faceoff, and Kevin Morina would score to stop the UNE run. Jacob Roy assisted the goal. Almost two and a half minutes later, Logan Proctor got on the board with an unassisted goal. WNE trailed 6-5.
- Although WNE would earn a man-up opportunity, WNE would not score the rest of the third quarter and trailed 6-5 going into the fourth. The stats in the third quarter saw a similar story as the first half. WNE led in shots (13-14), shots on goal (8-3), faceoff wins (7-0), and ground balls (15-4), but were losing 6-5. UNE also had more saves (5-0).
Fourth Quarter:
- The fourth did not start the way WNE would have wanted. Shea Fogarty scored to extend UNE's lead to 7-5. However, with 8:54 left in the contest, the Golden Bears awoke. Thomas Labbe started the run with a goal assisted by Jacob Roy. Roy then scored on an assist from Logan Proctor. The score was tied 7-7.
- Proctor would then receive a pass from Roy thirty seconds later and score 32 seconds after the Roy goal. WNE had the 8-7 lead. Six seconds after that goal, Jacob Roy found Logan Jenkins for the ninth goal. Then, just about a minute later, WNE led 10-7 thanks to a Logan Proctor goal assisted by Logan Jenkins.
- Shea Fogarty would get a goal back for the Nor'Easters with just over a minute left in the game, but it would not be enough to stage a comeback as WNE won 10-8. WNE ended the contest leading in shots (49-29), shots on goal (25-12), ground balls (45-31), and faceoff wins (18-4). Both teams had nine caused turnovers and 21 total turnovers. UNE had more saves (15-4).
