BRISTOL, R.I. â€" In a match-up of two outstanding defensive sides, Roger Williams University came away with a 1-0 victory over Western New England College in a first round match of the 2004 NCAA Division III Men's Soccer Championship.

The Golden Bears out-shot the Hawks by a 6-4 margin, but couldn't find the back of the net.

Roger Williams (15-4-4) sophomore forward Joel Montgomery headed in a cross from Sean Whalen in the 16th minute for the only score of the game. It was the 14th shutout of the season for the hosts.

Western New England College finished its record-breaking campaign with a 16-6-1 record with 14 of the victories also coming by shutouts. The Golden Bears outscored its opponents by a 60-16 margin.
