Western New England College falls to Babson in overtime

SPRINGFIELD, Mass. â€" Western New England College's field hockey team almost ended its regular season with one of its biggest wins ever.

Senior Gina Giardina (St. Louis, MO) scored the game-winner off a penalty corner only 2:29 into overtime to lead No. 19 Babson College to a 2-1 victory over  the upset-minded Golden Bears in a non-conference game Wednesday..

Western New England College surprised the Beavers by taking a 1-0 lead in the first half when senior Megan Cloutier (Greenfield, MA) scored her first goal of the season at the 21:39 mark.

Both teams then waged a defensive battle until senior Katie Janson (Easton, PA) tied the contest with an assist from Giardina with 23:58 remaining in the game.

Senior Jillian Brown (Plymouth, MA) finished with 11 saves for the Golden Bears while freshman Elissa Slovin (Andover, MA) had five stops for the Beavers (16-4).

Despite the loss, Western New England College finished the regular season with a 16-4 record, the best mark in its 25-year history.

Coach Sarah Kelly’s team is the top-seeded squad in the North Atlantic Conference (NAC) Tournament that begins Saturday at campus sites. Pairings and times will be announced.
