SPRINGFIELD, Mass. â€" Freshman Caitlin Gelber (Centereach, NY) scored the first two goals of her collegiate career to lead Western New England College to a 5-2 non-conference victory over visiting WPI on Saturday. This was the first meeting between the schools since 1987 and the Golden Bears first win over the Engineers in six meetings.

Sophomore Emily Popham (Orange, MA) gave WNEC a 1-0 with her first goal of the season at the 24:01 mark of the opening half. WPI tied the game when sophomore Heather Hassett (Oxford, MA) tallied an unassisted goal 1:39 later.

Gelber then gave Western New England College a 3-1 cushion by scoring twice with 1:01 left in the half and again at the 25-second mark.

Senior Alyssa Katz (Cortlandt Manor, NY) and junior Suzanne Loutrel (Springfield, VT) scored for the Golden Bears in the second half while sophomore Sarah White (Portland, ME) had the other WPI score.

WNEC freshmen Samantha Hensen (Branchville, NJ) and Sarah McQuarrie (Windham, ME) each contributed assists for their first collegiate points. Junior Alison Jameson (Brattleboro, MA) added her team high four assist of the season.

Western New England College improves its record to 3-1 while WPI falls to 3-1 with its first loss of the season.
