Box Score SPRINGFIELD, Mass. â€" This was, without a doubt, one of the biggest wins in school history.
Freshman Brian Dill (Portland, CT) scored his first collegiate goal with 1:14 remaining as the Western New England College men's soccer team rallied for a 3-2 upset victory over Williams College in a non-conference match Wednesday afternoon at Suprenant Field. Prior to today, Dill had taken only one shot in seven previous matches.
Trailing 2-0 early in the second half, the Golden Bears scored all of their goals in the final 17:46 to beat the Ephs who were ranked sixth nationally in the NSCAA/adidas Division III Poll. Williams also is first among New England Division III teams while WNEC is tied for eighth.
"The competitive spirit and team unity of our players was magnificient," said Western New England College coach Erin Sullivan. "To recover and come back against a team of Williams' caliber makes it even more rewarding. Our players gave a consummate effort and are to be commended."
Williams (4-1) broke a 0-0 half-time tie by scoring twice in a 2:51 span on goals by juniors Dana Leary (Washington, DC) in the 48th minute and Tommy Day (Needham, MA) in the 51st minute.
Western New England College (7-1) finally got on the board when senior Paul Russo (Dix Hills, NY) scored an unassisted goal in the 73rd minute. Junior Mike Zawislak (Newark, DE) tied the contest with an assist from classmate Scott Bullis (Barre, VT) in the 86th minute. Dill then made the winning shot 2:53 later with an assist from junior Scott Rogers (Middlefield, CT).
Junior Chris Wilk (Derry, NH) finished with seven saves for the Golden Bears while senior Nick Armington (Wenham, MA) had six stops for the Ephs.
Sullivan is a 1996 graduate of Williams and former standout goalkeeper for the Ephs. He defeated his former coach Mike Russo for the first time in two meetings. Williams won last year’s match by the score of 5-1.
