Box Score AMHERST, Mass. - The Western New England College men's soccer team posted a 1-0 upset victory over Amherst College in the rain Sunday afternoon (Nov. 12) in the second round of the NCAA Division III Championship at Hitchcock Field.
The Golden Bears, who avenged a 1-0 home loss to Amherst on October 11, now advance to the Round of 16 for the second straight year.
Western New England College (16-5-2) will meet Johns Hopkins (a 3-1 winner over Christopher Newport) next weekend with the date, time, and location to be announced.
Senior midfielder Michael Zawislak (Newark, DE) tallied the winning goal for the Golden Bears in the 22nd minute with an assist from senior forward Evan Heymann (Ipswich, MA).
The Lord Jeffs had a 16-5 advantage in shots (7-2 in the opening half), but couldn't the dent the rugged Golden Bears' defense that recorded its 10th shutout of the season and second in four matches.
Senior goalkeeper Chris Wilk (Derry, NH) finished with five saves for his ninth shutout, which featured one key stop on a shot by sophomore Nick Lynch (Kingston, Jamaica) in the 59th minute. The ball rebounded out to sophomore Jake Duker (Newton, MA) who ripped a point-blank shot but right at Wilk. Amherst sophomore keeper Jeff Grover (Framingham, MA) also made five saves.
It was another physical match with Amherst called for 11 fouls and Western New England College seven. The Lord Jeffs also received a pair of yellow cards while the Golden Bears were assessed one.
WNEC has now five consecutive contests and is 8-0-1 in its last nine outings. Amherst ends its season with a 13-3-1 record.
