Jim Maples tallies game winner as Western New England College blanks Westfield

Box Score

WESTFIELD, Mass. - Sophomore back Jim Maples (Pleasant Valley, NY) waited for the right time to score his first collegiate goal.

After a scoreless first half, Maples found the back of the net in the 54th minute with his first collegiate goal to lead the 12th-ranked Western New England College men's soccer team to a 2-0 victory over host Westfield State Wednesday night (Sept. 6).

The Western Massachusetts rivals christened the new Westfield State field and gave the large crowd of 300 an entertaining performance.

WNEC had several scoring opportunities in the first half and finally scored when Maples recovered his own blocked shot and drilled it inside the left post.

Senior midfielder Michael Zawislak (Newark, DE) added an insurance goal with assist from senior forward Kofi Oteng (Worcester, MA) and sophomore forward Dan Hare (Staatsburg, NY) with a minute left in the match.

Senior goalkeeper Chris Wilk (Derry, NH) had two saves for the Golden Bears while junior Mark Tiffany (Easthampton, MA) stooped 15 shots in a nice effort for the Owls.

Western New England College (2-0-1) out-shot Westfield State (1-2) by a 15-6 margin.
