Justine McComb gets winning goal in overtime as Western New England College beats Smith

Box Score

NORTHAMPTON, Mass. - Sophomore Justine McComb (Newington, CT) scored the game winning goal with 5:36 remaining in the first overtime to give the Western New England College field hockey team a thrilling 2-1 victory in the rain over Smith College Thursday evening (Oct. 11).

With the win, the Golden Bears improved to 5-10 while Smith fell to 2-10.

Neither team could score in the first half and it wasn't until 12:39 remained in regulation that sophomore Mary Kate Long (Boylston, MA) put the Pioneers ahead 1-0. The Golden Bears offense didn't quit, however, and with 4:26 left freshman Katy Vogl (Cazenovia, NY) tied the game up with an assist from McComb.

Prior to the overtime period, the game was suspended for 40 minutes due to thunder and lightning.

In overtime, both teams had scoring opportunities with each team taking four shots before senior Cori Eggert (Denville, NJ) carried the ball down the left side and passed it over to McComb who hammered it past Smith keeper Courtney Murphy (Florence, MA).

Murphy made seven saves while senior Emilie Donka (White River Junction, VT) stopped 13 shots for the Golden Bears.
