DUDLEY, Mass. - Senior co-captain Cori Eggert (Denville, NJ) scored two goals, including the game-winner with 45 seconds remaining in overtime, as the Western New England College field hockey team rallied for a 3-2 victory over host Nichols Saturday afternoon (Oct. 20).
The win gave the Golden Bears a 7-11 record, but more importanly a 5-2 mark in The Commonwealth Coast Conference (TCCC) that secured a home playoff game in the conference tournament starting next Saturday (Oct. 27).
Eggert gave WNEC a 1-0 lead at the 14:10 mark of the opening half with an assist from classmate Sarah McQuarrie (Windham, ME).
The Bison tied the contest just 1:55 later on a goal by Samantha Lacerra and took a 2-1 at half-time when Lauren Pettoruto fired home a goal at the 22:18 juncture.
Sophomore Justine McComb (Newington, CT) tied the contest at 48:18 with an assist from Eggert as both teams then kept one another off the board for almost 36 minutes.
Eggert delivered her fourth game-winning shot opf the season, with an assist from McQuarrie, to send the Golden Bears to their third win in four outings.
Once again, senior goalkeeper Emilie Donka (White River Junction, VT) play a big role in the win with 17 saves.
Nichols falls to 11-5 overall and 3-4 in TCCC.
