PORT CHARLOTTE, Fla. – The Western New England College baseball team defeated Hope College of Michigan 6-0 in the first game of a doubleheader Tuesday (Mar. 20) at the Port Charlotte Invitational for the program's 600th all-time victory.
Junior lefty Chris Anderson (Moodus, CT) fired a six-hitter (all singles) for the complete game shutout. He struck out three and walked two in winning his second straight decision.
Senior first baseman Tom Horgan (Westfield, MA) led the 11-hit attack with two singles, a run, and a pair of RBI.
Senior catcher Stephen Hanjack (Enfield, CT) chipped in with two singles and a RBI. Senior third baseman Josh Jacobs (Essex Junction, VT) had two hits, including a double, and a run. Junior designated hitter Travis Schwamb (West Springfield, MA) contributed two singles, a sacrifice fly, and run.
Senior leftfielder Eric Smolin (Westford, MA) had a two-run single in a three-run fifth that gave the Golden Bears a 5-0 lead.
In the second game, Hope scored five runs in the sixth inning for a 6-3 win. Jacobs led the Golden Bears with a two hits, including a two-run double. Freshman Steve Kearney (Glastonbury, CT) had two singles and a RBI. Schwamb and junior shortstop Ryan Kravontka (Glastonbury, CT) each belted a double.
Sophomore Jason Pizzoferrato (Windsor, CT) gave up six runs in 5 2/3 innings for the loss.
Western New England College has a 600-456-2 record for a 56.7 winning percentage since 1969 (39 years).
