SPRINGFIELD, Mass. – The Western New England College men's hockey squad is a suddenly one of the hottest teams in the ECAC Northeast.
Junior right wing Mike Majesty (Chicago, IL) scored twice in the final period, including the game-winner with 8:31 remaining as WNEC stunned previously undefeated conference co-leader UMass Dartmouth 3-2 Saturday afternoon (Jan. 19) at Smead Arena.
It was the second consecutive 3-2 victory and third straight win for the Golden Bears who started the season with a 0-12-1 mark.
UMass Dartmouth (8-5-1, 6-1 ECAC Northeast) took a 1-0 lead when sophomore forward Matt Bedard (Calgary AB) scored at the 15:11 mark of the opening period. Senior defenseman Tyler Crocker (Wakefield, MA) and sophomore forward Paul Jerusik (Springfield, MA) gained the assists.
Western New England College (3-12-1, 2-5-1 ECAC Northeast) tied the contest when junior forward Hank Levin (Lido Beach, NY) fired home a short-handed goal at 14:24 of the second period with assists from senior defenseman Nick Klassen (Parker, CO) and junior forward Phil Lamy (Manchester, NH).
The Corsairs pulled ahead again on a short-handed goal by sophomore defenseman Graeme Bourne (Redlands, CA) at 18:16. Sophomore forward Matt Serino (Saugus, MA) earned the assist.
That set the stage for Majesty who tied the game with an unassisted goal just 1:55 into the third stanza before his game-winning shot. Freshman defenseman Chris Lloyd (Lindenhurst, NY) had the assist. Majesty entered the contest with just one goal this season.
WNEC freshman goalie Justin Richards (Somers, CT) continued his solid play by stopping 24 shots for his third straight win. Junior Jeff Green (Medway, MA) finished with 14 saves for the visitors.
This was just the second win in 12 career meetings for Western New England College over UMass-Dartmouth and the program's first three-game winning streak in four years.
