SPRINGFIELD, Mass. – Junior center Brendan O'Brien (Braintree, MA) scored the game-winner on a power play goal at 5:48 of the third period as visiting Stonehill held on for an exciting 4-3 men's hockey victory over Western New England College in an ECAC Northeast contest Thursday night (Jan. 31) at Smead Arena.
The Skyhawks ended the Golden Bears' five-game unbeaten streak (4-0-1) in the process while evening their record at 6-6-1 overall and 6-4 in the conference.
Western New England College trailed 3-0 early in the second stanza before scoring a pair a power play goals in the final 9:34 of the period.
Senior forward Shawn Longley (Raymond, ME) scored the first goal for WNEC at 10:26 with assists from junior right wing Mike Majesty (Chicago, IL) and sophomore defenseman Joe Trimboli (Las Vegas, NV). Majesty then tallied his team high sixth goal of the season at 13:14 as freshman defenseman Alex Gorczyca (Columbus, IN) and junior forward Dean Smith (Warwick, RI) registered the assists.
O'Brien's shot gave the Skyhawks a two-goal cushion before freshman forward Kyle Daly (Auburn, MA) pulled the Golden Bears within one at the 15:05 mark. Junior forwards Hank Levin (Lido Beach, NY) and Phil Lamy (Manchester, NH) assisted on the play.
Stonehill never trailed in the contest taking an early 2-0 lead in the opening 8:20 of the contest. Freshman goalie Mike Manna (Framingham, MA) helped preserve the win by compiling 33 saves, including 15 in the final period.
Senior right wing Matt Curran (Scarborough, ME) opened the scoring at 6:35, assisted on the next goal by junior center Frank Amato (West Springfield, MA), and the game-winner. O'Brien and senior right wing Anthony Zanetti (Ludlow, MA) each finished with a goal and assist.
WNEC freshman goalie Justin Richards (Somers, CT) stopped 26 shots in dropping his first contest (4-1-1) in six starting assignments.
The Golden Bears now have a 4-13-2 record and 2-6-2 mark in the ECAC Northeast.
