Box Score SPRINGFIELD, Mass. – Senior Trina Campbell (San Anselmo, CA) had the game-winner and sophomore Courtney Murphy (Florence, MA) made 13 saves for her first win of the season as the Smith College field hockey team posted a 3-1 victory over host Western New England College in a non-league contest Thursday night (Oct. 16).
The Pioneers improve their record to 5-7 after defeating the Golden Bears for the second team this season. The first win was a 5-2 decision in the season opener at the Springfield Zenaty Invitational.
Western New England College took an early 1-0 lead when sophomore Katy Vogl (Cazenovia, NY) tallied her fifth goal of the season just 6:18 into the contest. Sophomore Tara Breslawski (North Babylon, NY) received the assist.
Freshman Phoebe Hopkins (Philadelphia, PA) tied the game with her 10th goal of the year at the 17:09 mark.
In the second half, Campbell followed with her second goal of the season at 43:04 before freshman Sarah Knowles (North Kingstown, RI) scored her first collegiate goal 2:33 later for a two-goal cushion. Junior Rebecca Capute (Easton, MD) had the assist.
Murphy had seven saves in the opening half and six in the second stanza.
WNEC freshman Lindsey Orszulak (Longmeadow, MA) stopped 11 shots, including seven in the opening half.
Smith had a slim 21-19 advantage in shots.
The Golden Bears fall to 1-13 following their fourth straight loss.
