Box Score NEW BEDFORD, Mass. - Senior forward Matt Serino (Saugus, MA) scored twice and sophomore forward Jason Stahl (Londonderry, NH) added a goal and two assists to lead the UMass Darmouth men's hockey team to a 6-1 ECAC Northeast victory over visiting Western New England College in the season opener for both teams Saturday (Nov. 8) at the Hetland Memorial Ice Arena.
WNEC led 1-0 after the opening period on a power play goal by sophomore defenseman Alex Gorczyca (Columbus, IN) 6:21 into the game. Senior forward Phil Lamy (Manchester, NH) and freshman forward Kory Grahl (San Diego, CA) had the assists.
The Corsairs struck for five goals in the middle period as Cerino tied the contest at the 1:34 mark followed by a score by junior forward Matt Berard (Calgary, AB) at 6:58. Cerino notched his second goal at 8:21 with sophomore defenseman Adam Horgan (Clayton, NC) raising the margin to three only 27 seconds later. Stahl netted his goal less than four minutes later.
Sophomore goalie Justin Richards (Somers, CT) made nine saves and allowed five goals before being lifted in the second period by junior Dennis Harrsch (Morrisonville, NY) who also stopped nine shots.
UMass Dartmouth junior goalie Jeff Green (Medway, MA) finished with 21 saves.
UMD dropped a 3-2 decision to Western New England College last year, but went on to capture the ECAC Northeast title and participate in the NCAA Division III Championship.
