CHANDLER, Ariz. - The Western New England College baseball team scored seven runs in both the second and eighth innings for a convincing 16-5 victory over Elmhurst College (Ill.) Friday (March 21) in its final game at the Greater Phoenix Invitational.
The Golden Bears banged out a season high 17 hits led by senior first baseman Travis Schwamb (West Springfield, MA) who had four singles.
Junior leftfielder Mike Beck (Whitesboro, NY) added three hits, including two doubles, four RBI, and three runs.
Junior centerfielder Chris Newell (Wallingford, CT) also had three hits.
Junior southpaw Bryan Calzone (Bethel, CT) notched his first win of the season after allowing five runs and 11 hits in seven innings with striking out four and walking four.
Freshman Sean Lopata (South Windsor, CT) retired all six batters he faced in the eighth and ninth.
Elmhurst, directed by former WNEC assistant and Holyoke Giants head coach Joel Southern, took a 1-0 lead in the top of the first before the Golden Bears knotted the contest in the bottom half of the frame.
Senior leftfielder Scott Perkinson (Elk Grove, IL) led the Bluejays with three singles while senior first baseman Jim Deschamps (Glenview, IL) had a single, double, and sacrifice fly.
