BRIDGEWATER, Mass. - Junior Lindsey Fenton (Pelham, MA) scored six goals as third-seeded Western New England College defeated top-seeded Bridgewater State 18-10 in the title game of the 2008 Eastern College Athletic Conference (ECAC) Diviison III New England Women's Lacrosse Championship Sunday afternoon (May 11).
Fenton also added an assist and six draw controls in earning the tournament Most Outstanding Player Award.
This was a match-up of former New England Women's Lacrosse Alliance (NEWLA) rivals and for the first half it seemed like another of their highly-competitive battles.
The Bridgewater Bears took a 1-0 lead on a goal by senior Alison Gugliotta (Norwood, MA) with 25:30 left in the half.
The WNEC Golden Bears tied the game on a goal by junior Michelle Thompson (Wilbraham, MA) with 22:59 remaining with an assist from Fenton.
Using her speed and quickness, Fenton scored just 12 seconds later and again at the 22:21 mark to give Western New England College a 3-1 advantage.
Bridgewater battled back tying the game at 8-8 before Fenton's fifth goal with 18 seconds left gave the Golden Bears a 9-8 edge at he break.
Freshman Jenny Jones (Framingham, MA) tied the contest for the hosts just 1:24 into the second stanza before WNEC reeled off seven unaswered goals to break the game open.
Freshman Jeanmarie Barbato (Huntington Station, NY) and senior Kaitlin Zangle (Wingdale, NY) started the run with goals just 1:14 apart with just over 23 minutes remaining.
Senior Katye Devine (New Fairfield, CT) tallied three of her four goals in the stretch while Fenton fired home her last goal. She also contributed five draw controls and four ground balls.
Barbato and Zangle each finished with two goals as did senior Jillian Caracciolo (Burnt Hills, NY) who netted both in the final 1:51.
Freshman Nicole Poli (Medfield, MA) led the defensive with five caused turnovers and four ground balls. Junior Erin Conn (Yorktown Heights, NY) also picked-up four ground balls.
Freshman goalie Marissa Bonitatibus (Yorktown Heights, NY) made 11 saves, including seven big stops on free position shots.
Jones (who set a BSC season record with 67 goals) and freshman Courtney Lennon (Medfield, MA) each scored three times while sophomore Meghan Griffin (Billerica, MA) compiled 13 saves.
Bridgewater State ends its season with a 15-5 record.
The Golden Bears completed one of the best seasons in program history with a 17-5 record.
Western New England College played all three of its tournament games on the road outscoring its opponents by a 53-21 amargin. The Golden Bears defeated sixth-seeded Castleton State 22-4 in the quarterfinals and Roger Williams 13-7 in the semifinals.
