Late goal gives Salve Regina conference win over Western New England College

NEWPORT, R.I. -Freshman forward Kirsten Johannesen (Warren, VT) broke a 2-2 tie with her second goal of the season with 1:59 remaining to lift Salve Regina to a 3-2 win over Western New England College in The Commonwealth Coast Conference field hockey action Saturday afternoon (Sept. 13) at Lawrence Avenue Field.

Western New England College took a 2-0 lead in the first half on a goal by senior Caitlin Gelber (Centereach, N.Y.) at 7:43 off a pass from sophomore Katy Vogl (Cazenovia, N.Y.).

Sophomore Aimee O'Connell (Rome, NY) fired home a shot at 20:24, which stretched the WNEC lead to 2-0.

The Seahawks (1-3, 1-0 TCCC) rallied to score three goals in the final 49:36 to grab their first win of the season.

Junior forward Samantha Wolfe (East Bridgewater, MA) answered O'Connell's goal with her second goal of the season to cut the Seahawks deficit to 2-1.

Sophomore forward Ali Campagna (Hartford, CT) had her first goal of the season toi tie game with 8:18 remaining in the contest, setting the stage for Johannesen's dramatics.

Junior goalkeeper Devin Eppley (Darien, CT) made seven saves to earn the win for Salve while freshman goalie Lindsey Orszulak (Longmeadow, MA) recorded 16 saves for the Golden Bears.

Western New England College falls to 0-4 after dropping its conference opener.
