Box Score SPRINGFIELD, Mass. - Smith College scored the first three goals in posting a 5-2 decision over Western New England College in a first round game of the Zenaty Invitational Field Hockey Tournament Saturday afternoon (Sept. 6) at Springfield College's Stagg Field.
Rebecca Capute gave the Pioneers a 1-0 lead only 9:46 into the contest. Phobe Hopkins tallied two of her three goals in the final 19:02 for a 3-0 advantage at intermission.
Western New England College got on the board on a goal by sophomore Kaela Jalbert (Turner, ME) with an assist from sophomore Aimee O'Connell (Rome, NY) with 16:02 left in the game.
Smith took another three-goal cushion when Natalie Wickles found the net just 1:09 later.
O'Connell netted the Golden Bears' final goal at the 8:46 mark before Hopkins scored her final goal with 10 seconds remaining to complete the scoring.
WNEC freshman goalie Lindsey Orszulark (Longmeadow, MA) turned away 21 saves in a solid performance in her college debut. Margaret Winter had eight saves for Pioneers.
The Golden Bears, who were playing their season opener, will meet Worcester State (who fell 2-0 to host Springfield) at 11:00 am Sunday (Sept. 7) in the third-place game.
