SPRINGFIELD, Mass.
– Freshman forward Maggie Wigley (Bridgewater, MA) scored the game-winning goal 1:57 into overtime as Worcester Polytechnic Institute came from behind to beat the Western New England College field hockey team 3-2 in a non-league contest Tuesday night (Sept. 15) at Golden Bear Stadium.

The Engineers improve their record to 4-1 while the Golden Bears fall to 0-5.

It was a back and forth game all evening as freshman forward Megan Read (Wrentham, MA) gave the visitors a 1-0 lead with an unassisted goal at the 20:05 mark.

The Golden Bears tied the contest when junior forward Katy Vogl (Cazenovia, NY) scored off a penalty corner with 2:41 remaining in the half.

Western New England College went ahead when junior forward Kaela Jalbert (Turner, ME) fired home a shot with an assist from freshman defenseman Laura Madaio (Paxton, MA) at 62:04.

WPI quickly came back to knot the score on an unassisted goal by sophomore forward Emily Pearce (Avon, CT) just 2:01 later.

That set the stage for Wrigley's winning shot as sophomore Danielle Antonellis (Duxbury, MA) earned the assist.

The Engineers out-shot WNEC by a 19-13 margin, including 12-5 in the second half.

WPI senior goalie Allie Griffin (Billerica, MA) finished with eight saves.
