SPRINGFIELD, Mass.
– Junior midfielder Kasey Bascetta (Granby, CT) fired in the game winning goal with 34.7 seconds remaining in overtime as Westfield State defeated the Western New England College field hockey team 2-1 Thursday night (Sept. 17) at Golden Bear Stadium.

The Owls improve their record to 3-2 while the Golden Bears remain winless at 0-6.

Westfield State got on the board first courtesy of junior midfielder Alicia Gardner (Athol, MA) who scored at the 11:18 mark in the opening half.

WNEC junior forward Aimee O'Connell (Rome, NY) tied the game when her shot found the back of the goal with 12:47 remaining in the contest.

It appeared the game would head into a second overtime, but Westfield drew a penalty corner, which led to Bascetta's goal. Senior defender Alyssa Wesoly (Burlington, CT) and Gardner were credited with the assists.

Sophomore goalie Amanda McCarthy (Franklin, MA) compiled six saves for the Owls.

Westfield had a big 27-9 shot advantage, but Golden Bears' sophomore goalie Lindsey Orzsulak (Longmeadow, MA) kept the home team in the game with 17 saves in an outstanding performance.
