SPRINGFIELD, Mass. – Sophomore forward Phoebe Hopkins (Philadelphia, PA) scored with 4:34 remaining in overtime as Smith came back to defeat the Western New England College field hockey team 3-2 on Thursday (Sept. 24) night in non-league action at Golden Bear Stadium.

Smith (3-3) didn't waste any time getting on the board as senior forward Rebecca Capute (Easton, MD) scored two minutes and 25 seconds into the contest unassisted.

Western New England College (1-8) tied it in the second frame as junior forward Amy Hedberg (Guildford, CT) found classmate Katy Vogl (Cazenovia, NY) for the score at the 46:28 mark.

Two minutes later Vogl and Hedberg switched roles and Hedberg tapped it in for the 2-1 advantage.

It remained tied until Smith freshman forward Zoe Sperber (Bennington, VT) tied it at the 53:02 mark with the assist from classmate Nia Spooner (Bronx, NY) on a penalty corner.

Sophomore Lindsey Orzsulak (Longmeadow, MA) had 15 saves in another solid effort in goal for Western New England College.

Senior goalie Margaret Winter (Purchase, NY) finished with five saves for the Pioneers.

Smith out shot the Golden Bears 28-15 and held a 7-4 edge in penalty corners.
