SPRINGFIELD, Mass. – Senior midfielder Tony Rosa (Ludlow, MA) scored one minute and 57 seconds into the game with the assist from sophomore midfielder Shawn Fitzpatrick (Burnt Hill, NY) as the Western New England College men's soccer team beat Westfield State 2-0 in the opening round match of the Soccer City Shootout Saturday (Sept. 5) at Suprenant Field.

This was the season opener for the Golden Bears who will meet city rival Springfield (a 3-0 winner over Husson in the second game) in the championship match at 3:00 p.m. Sunday (Sept. 6).

Westfield State (0-1-1) will play Husson (0-2) in the consolation match at Noon.

Western New England College tallied its final goal midway through the second half as junior co-captain Alex Dos Santos (Ludlow, MA) scored off a throw-in by senior forward Ryan Praleikas (Naugatuck, CT).

Western New England College senior goalkeeper Kyle Bak (Cumberland, RI) finished with nine saves for the shutout.

Senior Lucas Dexter (Acushnet, MA) stopped five shots for Westfield State. The Owls haven't scored in two matches after battling Curry to a 0-0 in double overtime tie in their opener on September 2.

In the second game, freshman goalie Chris Walton (Cromwell, CT) registered seven saves in his college debut as Springfield blanked Husson 3-0.

The Pride led 1-0 at the half as senior midfielder James Ashcroft (Shelton, CT) assisted senior forward John Plourd (Southampton, MA) at the 41:50 mark.

Ashcroft scored on a penalty kick and sophomore forward Eric Stalsburg (Old Saybrook, CT) put in the last of Springfield's three goals with 9:01 left in the contest. Sophomore midfielder Jae Tracey (Webster, NY) earned the assist.

Junior goalie Miguel Dominguez (Rome, GA) finished with five saves for Husson.
