SPRINGFIELD, Mass. - The Western New England College field hockey team opened its 2009 season with a pair of losses at the Zenaty Invitational falling to host Springfield (8-0) on Saturday (Sept. 5) and The College at Brockport (2-1) on Sunday (Sept. 6).
The Golden Bears managed only 16 shots in the two outings while their opponents had 55.
In the opener, the Pride scored four times in each half in coasting to the victory. Senior midfielder
Morgan Rein (Mystic, CT) led the way with a goal and three assists. Freshman
Kayla Sokol (West Brookfield, MA) tallied twice.

Katy Hall (Pawtucket, RI) compiled 15 saves for WNEC while sophomore
Alison McCarthy (North Andover, MA) turned aside four attempts.
Western New England College had a better showing against Brockport battling to a 0-0 halftime tie.
The Golden Eagles scored a pair of unanswered goals before the Golden Bears cut the margin to one following a goal by freshman
Katie Clegg (Athol, MA) with 10:20 left in the game.
Sophomore
Lindsey Orszulak (Longmeadow, MA) recorded 13 saves in her season debut for Western New England College.
Junior defender
Erin Griifin (Lowell, MA) made the All-Tournament Team for the Golden Bears.
Freshman
Kasey Schreiner (Hamburg, NY) finished with five saves for Brockport.
Springfield went on to defeat Worcester State 3-1 in the championship game. WSC advanced to the title game with a 2-1 overtime win over Brockport on Saturday.
