Western New England College tops Western Connecticut 2-1 in non-league contest

DANBURY, Conn.
– The Western New England College field hockey team defeated Western Connecticut, 2-1, in a non-league contest Tuesday evening (Oct. 26) at the Westside Athletic Complex.

This was the third straight win for the Golden Bears who are now 8-10. The Colonials drop to 7-9.

Freshman midfielder Sarah Race (Cazenovia, NY) gave WNEC an early 1-0 lead at 17:26, following up a rebound shot by senior midfielder Erin Griffin (Lowell, MA).

Senior forward Katharyn Vogl (Cazenovia, NY) stretched the lead to two at 57:24 with an assist from freshman midfielder Jaynie Mueller (Colorado Springs, CO).

The Colonials got on the board when sophomore defender Deanne Mastrocola (Goshen, CT) scored an unassisted goal at 61:27.

Western Connecticut kept the pressure on holding an 18-8 edge in shots, but couldn't get the equalizer down the stretch.

Western New England College sophomore goalkeeper Kaitlyn Hall (Pawtucket, RI) earned the win after making 10 saves.

WCSU sophomore goalkeeper Heather Stone (Valhalla, NY) stopped three shots in the contest.

The Golden Bears will travel to Elms on Thursday (Oct. 28) at 7:00 p.m. for their final regular season game of the season.
