NORTHFIELD, Vt. -- Sophomore quarterback
Kris Sabourin (Georgia, VT) completed 12-of-18 passes for 143 yards and three touchdowns as the Norwich football team defeated visiting Western New England College 35-7 in the season opener for both teams before 3,207 fans Saturday (Sept. 4) at Sabine Field.
Sabourin also rushed for 114 yards as the Cadets compiled 442 yards in total offense.
Senior receiver
Emilio Martinez (Brunswick, ME) caught six passes for 88 yards, including a 52-yard score that gave the hosts a 28-0 lead at the 10:36 mark of the third quarter.
Sophomore receiver
Chris Denton (Plantation, FL) added five receptions for 49 yards and two touchdowns. His first score came from five yards and gave Norwich a 7-0 lead with 1:11 left in the opening stanza. Denton then hauled in an 18-yard pass with 46 seconds left before halftime for a 21-0 advantage.
Western New England College tallied its only touchdown on a two-yard run by sophomore running back
James Georges (Stamford, CT) with 12:51 left in the game.
Sophomore quarterback
Josh Lamson (Southington, CT) was only 6-of-18 passing for 65 yards in his Golden Bears' debut. He directed an effective 12-play, 80-yard march that led to Georges' first collegiate touchdown.
Junior receiver
Kenny Muhlack (Groton, CT) had four catches for 38 yards.
Sophomore defensive back
Phil Tsopanides (Fairfield, CT) and senior linebacker
Justin Bailey (Northborough, MA) compiled 14 and 10 tackles, respectively. Junior end
Scott Wojciechowski (Adams, MA) chipped in with a 17-yard interception return.
Senior
Jake Field (Long Valley, NJ) had a solid performance by averaging 40.9 yards for nine punts with a long of 55 and four inside the 20-yard line.
Western New England College finished with only 124 yards in the game.
