Western New England comes up short with tough 3-1 loss to nationally ranked UNE

SPRINGFIELD, Mass. – The University of New England, ranked 20th nationally, remained unbeaten on the season with a 3-1 win over Western New England on Monday (Oct. 10) afternoon in Commonwealth Coast Conference (CCC) action.
 
The Nor'easters improve to 13-0 (5-0 CCC); while the Golden Bears slip to 4-10 (2-3 CCC) on the year.
 
UNE jumped out to an early lead at 7:28 on a goal by sophomore forward Casey Clark (Bethlehem, NH) that was assisted by sophomore midfielder Hannah Tavella (Putnam Valley, NY).
 
Clark struck again at 9:44 as she knocked in her own rebound to put the visitors up 2-0.
 
Senior forward Michelle Oswald (Jay, ME) gave UNE a 3-0 edge just before the half as she scored an unassisted goal at 31:02.
 
Western New England got on the board in the 54th minute as freshman forward Whitney Fraleigh (Poughkeepsie, NY) notched her fourth goal of the year.
 
The Nor'easters held a 15-7 edge in shots on goal; and also had a 10-3 advantage in penalty corners.
 
UNE freshman goalkeeper Kaitlyn Warren (Boscawen, NH) made six saves to earn the victory in the cage.
 
Western New England junior goalkeeper Kaitlyn Hall (Providence, RI) recorded 11 saves in the contest.
 
The Golden Bears return to action on Thursday (Oct. 13) as they travel to Smith for a 4:00 p.m. non-conference contest.
