NORTHAMPTON, Mass. – Sophomore forward
Allie Stein (Ann Arbor, MI) scored three goals, including the game-winner 9:47 into overtime, to lead the Smith field hockey team to a 5-4 victory over Western New England in a non-conference contest Thursday afternoon (Oct. 13).
Stein also had an assist to help the Pioneers raise their record to 4-8.
Western New England jumped to a 2-0 lead on goals by junior forward
Caitlin Foster (Hyde Park, NY) at 9:05 and junior
Shelby Van Huysen (Killingworth, CT) at the 18:43 mark.
Stein cut the margin to one with a goal at 28:34 before the Golden Bears upped their lead to 3-1 following a goal by junior midfielder
Lindsay Lalonde (Middlebury, CT) at 32:16.
Freshman midfielder
Caroline Noonan (Guilford, CT) scored her first collegiate goal with 36 seconds left before halftime to get the hosts within one at the break.
Sophomore midfielder
Alyssa Chamberlain (Charlton, MA) gave Western New England its third two-goal advantage with a goal at 43:53, but Smith dominated after with three unanswered scores,
Freshman forward
Sara Mercier (Portland, ME) closed the gap to one with a goal at 46:10 and Stein then tied the game a short time later at 53:56.
Sophomore goalie
Savannah Lawson (Oak Bluffs, MA) settled down after a shaky start to finish with16 saves for the Pionners who held WNE scoreless for the final 35:54.
Western New England falls to 4-11 after suffering its third straight defeat.
