University of New England uses fast start in 4-1 defeat of Western New England

BIDDEFORD, Maine - The University of New England got off to a quick start scoring four times in the opening 15:29 to record a 4-1 victory over Western New England in Commonwealth Coast Conference (CCC) action on Saturday (Oct. 22) afternoon at the Big Blue Turf.
 
The Nor'easters improve to 15-1 (7-1 CCC); while the Golden Bears slip to 4-13 (2-5 CCC).
 
UNE jumped out to an early lead as sophomore Hannah Tavella (Putnam Valley, NY) scored at 1:33 on a feed from senior Michelle Oswald (Jay, ME).
 
The Nor'easters grabbed a 2-0 lead in the 5th minute, as senior Bree Tupper (Winthrop, ME) drove a hard shot from 14 yards out into the right side.
 
After Tavella notched her second of the day at 14:10, the Nor'easters struck again just over a minute later as junior Emily Koehler (Pelham, NH) scored on a penalty corner to stretch the lead to 4-0.
 
The Golden Bears got on the board at 18:35 to cut into the lead on a goal from junior Shelby Van Huysen (Killingworth, CT) off a penalty corner from classmate Lindsay Lalonde (East Middlebury, VT).
 
UNE freshman goalkeeper Kaitlyn Warren (Boscawen, N.H.) saved three shots to get the win in net.
 
Freshman goalie Emily Mastropaolo (Cazenovia, NY) made nine saves in 54 minutes of play, coming on in relief of junior goalkeeper Kaitlyn Hall (Pawtucket, RI) who made three saves in the contest.

The Golden Bears will host CCC rival Endicott on Tuesday (Oct. 25) at 7:00 p.m.
