WENHAM, Mass. – Even though the Western New England men's soccer team had already clinched the top seed in the upcoming Commonwealth Coast Conference (CCC) Championship, the Golden Bears wanted to end their regular season on a winning note.
It was mission accomplished as senior midfielder
Shawn Fitzpatrick (Burnt Hills, NY) netted the only goal with 15 seconds remaining in the opening half as the Golden Bears posted a well-earned 1-0 victory over a strong Gordon squad Tuesday evening (Oct. 25).
Senior forward
Kienan Garn (Lake Huntington, NY) earned the assist as WNE capped a perfect season in conference play at 9-0 while raising its record to 15-3-1.
Western New England also knocked Gordon (7-7-3, 6-1-2 CCC) from the unbeaten ranks in conference play and avenged a disappointing 3-1 loss to the Fighting Scots in the semifinals of last year's Conference Championship.
The Golden Bears were sharp in taking a 16-8 advantage in shots and nine to three edge in corner kicks.
Sophomore goalkeeper
Domenick Villano (Bronxville, NY) made two saves for Western New England. Sophomore
Tim Hardy (Gorham, ME) stopped seven shots for Gordon.
Coach
Erin Sullivan's team entered the match ranked fourth in the weekly National Soccer Coaches Association of America (NSCAA) Division III New England poll and received votes in the national NSCAA rankings.
Western New England will host eight-seeded University of New England in a quarterfinal round match of the CCC Championship at noon Saturday (Oct. 29) at Suprenant Field.
