SPRINGFIELD, Mass. - The Western New England women's lacrosse team came through with one of its top performances of the season in posting a 17-10 victory over visiting Roger Williams Tuesday afternoon (Apr. 12).
The Golden Bears bounced back nicely from a disappointing 11-9 loss at Gordon last Saturday to raise their record to 9-4 overall and 6-1 in The Commonwealth Coast Conference (TCCC). The Hawks fall to 8-5 and 6-2 in conference play.
Junior midfielder
Katie Toomy (Northborough, MA) led Western New England with four goals and three assists. Freshman midfielder
Kelsey Daniels (South Windsor, CT) also scored four goals (all in the second half) with an assist.
Senior attacker
Jeanmarie Barbato (Huntington Station, NY) added three goals while senior defender
Nicole Poli (Medfield, MA) scored twice and had a team high five ground balls and three caused turnovers.
Roger Williams junior attacker
Danica Dellia (Norwalk, CT) netted three goals and dished out three assists. She scored two of her goals in a 55-second span to give the visitors an early 3-1 lead with 26:06 left in the opening half.
The Golden Bears took the lead for good at 5-4 when Toomy scored on a nice assist from freshman midfielder
Shelby Trebbe (Wilbraham, MA) at the 15:32 mark. Sophomore attacker
Julianne Green (Bay Shore, NY) and Barbato fired in shots a little more than a minute apart for a 7-4 advantage with 11:28 left before the break.
Western New England went on to take an 8-5 lead at half-time, then dominated the second half behind Kelsey and a relentless defense that kept RWU off the board for a little more than 30 minutes.

There were 48 fouls in the contest (27 for Roger Williams, 21 for Western New England) with the Hawks also receiving three yellow cards.
