Scoring Summary
SPRINGFIELD, Mass. – All junior midfielder
Lindsay Lalonde (East Middlebury, VT) needed was a second change to give the Western New England field hockey team its first win of the season.
Lalonde made up for missing a penalty stroke at the end of the first half by drilling home the game-winner with 3:34 remaining as WNE knocked WPI from the unbeaten ranks with a thrilling 2-1 victory Tuesday night (Sept. 13).
The Golden Bears are now 1-4 while the Engineers slip to 4-1.
Western New England took a 1-0 lead when sophomore midfielder
Jayne Mueller (Colorado Springs, CO) scored on a penalty stroke 24:01 into the first half. It was her team-best fourth goal of the year.
The game remained close until WPI senior midfielder
Danielle Antonellis (Duxbury, MA) netted the equalizer with 8:48 left in the game.
That set the stage for Lalonde who made a nice move to the right side and fired in the winning shot from about 10 yards out.
WNE junior goalie
Katy Hall (Pawtucket, RI) made a valuable contribution by compiling 12 saves with seven coming in the second half. The Golden Bears defenders also came up with three defensive saves in the game.
WPI held a commanding 19-7 advantage in shots, including a big 10-3 margin in the second half, but couldn't pull ahead thanks to the stellar work by Hall.
Sophomore
Liz Dufresne (Worcester, MA) stopped three shots for the visitors.
