SPRINGFIELD, Mass. – A balanced scoring attack featuring six players with multiple points led the Keene State Owls to a 9-0 victory over Western New England on Saturday evening (Sept. 3) at Golden Bear Stadium.
Keene State opened the scoring at 11:06 as senior forward
Jacki Benson (Hampstead, NH) scored on an assist from classmate
Elizabeth Coffin (Sugar Hill, NH).
Western New England hung tough in the first stanza, trailing 2-0 heading into the half-time break despite being out-shot 16-0.
Keene State's relentless pressure eventually wore down the Golden Bears in the second half, as they tallied three goals in a three minute period to stretch the lead to 5-0.
The Owls were led offensively by the trio of junior forward
Kalin Billert (Center Conway, NH), sophomore midfielder
Leddy Gallagher (Acton, MA), and freshman forward
Julia Forgione (Windham, NH) who each tallied a pair of goals on the night.
Benson, senior forward
Niki Smith (Southwick, MA), and senior midfielder
Alyce Ferenc (Rumney, NH) each contributed a goal and an assist in the contest.
Western New England junior goalie
Kaitlyn Hall (Pawtucket, RI) recorded 12 saves in the loss. Senior defender
Kathleen Jasinski (Templeton, MA) picked up a defensive save.
Freshman goalkeeper
Caitlin Davino-Draper (Hanover, MA) made one stop in recording the win for the Owls.
Keene State improves to 1-0 on the season; while Western New England falls to 0-2 on the year.
The Golden Bears return to action on Wednesday (Sept. 7) to host Westfield State at 7:00 p.m. in a non-league match-up.
