Westfield State earns 6-3 win over Western New England in non-league match

SPRINGFIELD, Mass. – Senior forward Jessi Gould (Canton, MA) tallied four goals to lead Westfield State to a 6-3 victory over Western New England on Wednesday (Sept. 7) evening at Golden Bear Stadium.

The Owls improve to 2-0 on the season; while the Golden Bears drop to 0-3.

Gould opened the scoring at 10:36 on an assist from fellow senior forward Jessica Donovan (Metheun, MA).

The Golden Bears leveled the score on a goal from junior forward Caitlin Foster (Hyde Park, NY) at 23:20 on an assist from sophomore midfielder Alyssa Chamberlain (Charlton, MA).

Gould quickly put the Owls back in front less than a minute later as she converted a feed from senior forward Kathryn Kenney (Suffield, CT).

WNE answered back at 27:36, as junior defender Laura Madiao (Paxton, MA) scored on an assist from sophomore defender Shelby Van Huysen (Killingworth, CT).

Westfield grabbed the lead for good as Gould added the next two goals to stretch the lead to 4-2.

Western New England closed the gap to 4-3 on a goal from junior midfielder Lindsay Lalonde (East Middlebury, VT) assisted by Foster.

Kenney and junior forward Liz Hall (Southwick, MA) each added insurance goals to close out the game for the visiting Owls.

Senior goalkeeper Amanda McCarthy (Franklin, MA) made six stops to record the win.

Junior goalkeeper Kaitlyn Hall (Pawtucket, RI) made five saves; while freshman goalie Emily Mastrapaolo (Cazenovia, NY) came on in relief to make eight stops for the Golden Bears.

Western New England returns to the field on Sunday (Sept. 11) as they travel to take on Castleton State at 4:00 p.m.
