Golden Bears' Offense Shut Down at Roger Williams

Box Score BRISTOL, R.I.--Despite outshooting Roger Williams University and doubling up the Hawks on corner kicks, the Western New England University men's soccer team ended up on the short end of a 2-0 result on the road Wednesday evening. Roger Williams kept its hold on first place in the Commonwealth Coast Conference with a 6-1 ledger as part of a 12-4 overall mark. The Golden Bears, meanwhile, move down in the CCC standings at 2-3-2 and 7-7-3 overall, maintaining a spot in the conference playoff hunt.

The game was tightly contested throughout, with hard tackling, battles for loose balls, and close scoring attempts on both sides.

One miscue, however, by Western New England proved costly. In the 22nd minute, Mike Durkin attempted a pass back to teammate Domenick Villano, but the short chip went over the keeper's head, bouncing into the net for an own goal and a 1-0 Hawk lead.

Then the Hawks added an insurance tally three minutes later as Bradley Macdonald sent a long pass to a streaking Andrew Carlson on the right side. Carlson put a quick deke on a Golden Bear defender, shifted to the left side, and knocked in his fifth goal of the season.

Despite trailing for a majority of the game, Western New England continued to fight and held a 21-17 edge on shots. In addition, the Golden Bears had seven corners to the Hawks' three.

Jon Pelloso made four saves in the game, while Villano also stopped four shots.

Roger Williams hosts the University of New England while Western New England takes on Curry, both games on Saturday.
