Golden Bears Let Lead Slip Away vs. CCC Front-Runner Gordon

Box Score SPRINGFIELD, Mass.--The Western New England women's soccer team capped off an up and down regular season with a heartbreaking 2-1 double overtime loss Wednesday at Suprenant Field to Gordon College. The Golden Bears seemed poised to pull off one of the most impressive wins of their season before Gordon fought back for the road victory. Western New England finished the regular season with a record of 8-10-1 overall and 2-7 in the Commonwealth Coast Conference, while the conference-leading Fighting Scots end up at 15-2 (8-1 in the CCC).

The first half was full of action on both sides of the field, and Western New England jumped out to an early lead on a header goal by Emma Norden, her fourth of the season, in the 17th minute. Norden was on the receiving end of a beautiful cross by Bonnie Bousquet from the right side.

Gordon consistently applied pressure on the Golden Bears defense throughout the half, getting 10 shots off and forcing Western New England goalkeeper Briana Kubik to make five saves. But WNE held a slim 1-0 lead at the intermission.

Kubik made several impressive stops in the early part of the second half, but Gordon was finally able to break through and tie the game in the 72nd minute, when Taylor McCrery outran several Golden Bears defenders and netted her ninth goal of the season, unassisted.

The Fighting Scots were able to control both overtime periods, maintaining possession for the majority of the time and taking six shots to Western New England's zero. The Golden Bears almost managed to escape with a tie, but Gordon's Karina Scavo found teammate Caitlin Nedde in front of the net for the game-winning goal with two-and-a-half minutes remaining in the second extra session.

For the game, Gordon held a commanding 24-7 shots advantage but Kubik gave the Golden Bears a chance by making 11 saves.

Seniors Alexis Bshara and Jocelyn Rose played their last game at Suprenant Field this afternoon, but the co-captains will get a chance to extend their season this weekend. The No. 8-seed Golden Bears will get another opportunity for the upset against top-seeded Gordon on Saturday, when the two teams meet in the quarterfinal round of the CCC Tournament in Wenham.
