Second Half Goal Stands Up in 1-0 Win at Nichols

Box Score DUDLEY, Mass.--Freshman Sarah Marois scored the only goal of the game in the 51st minute and the Western New England University defense did the rest, as the Golden Bears eked out a 1-0 victory Saturday over Nichols in Commonwealth Coast Conference women's soccer action at Vendetti Field. The Golden Bears improve to 6-7-1 overall and 1-4 in the CCC, while the Bison dip to 3-7-2 and 0-5 in the conference.

The first half ended in a 0-0 draw. Nichols junior Shelby Aminti had the best opportunity over the first 45 minutes as she tried to deposit a free kick in the 36th minute. Western New England outshot the Bison 10-4 and took three of the four corner kicks awarded.

Then in the second half, Marois broke up the stalemate when she knocked home the rebound of senior co-captain's Alexis Bshara shot off the post.

Sophomore Tayler Mazurski had a chance to net an insurance marker 14 minutes later but her attempt went to the left of the goal.

Overall, the Golden Bears had a 15-5 advantage in the shot column and doubled up the Bison 5-2 on corner kicks.

Rookie Western New England goalkeeper Briana Kubik turned away four shots to chalk up her third career shutout. Her freshman counterpart Melissa Toomey collected seven saves in the setback.
