EASTON, Mass.--The Western New England University men's hockey team scored three goals in the second period en route to a 4-2 victory Sunday over NCAA Division II opponent Stonehill in non-league action. The Golden Bears improve to 6-3 while the Skyhawks drop to 4-8 with their fourth straight loss.
Western New England spotted the hosts a 1-0 in the first period when Anthony D'Elia scored on a wrap-up around and slid the puck between the pads of sophomore goaltender
Tim Carr.
But then the Golden Bears erupted for a trio of goals by junior co-captain
John Kelly, sophomore
Michael Darrar and junior
Chris Connors 10 minutes and 39 seconds apart beginning three minutes in. Andrew Cramer found Kelly wide open in front of the crease. Then Darrar's shot trickled in a shot from the right face-off circle with WNE on the power play. Connors redirected
Rance Vukovic's shot from the point.
In the third period, sophomore
Matt Dore gave WNE a commanding 4-1 lead when he picked up a loose puck in the slot and took a slap shot into the top right-corner.
Robbie Dorgan scored at the 13:29 mark when his shot from the right face-off circle hit a WNE defenseman and bounced into the net past a diving Carr trying to make a glove save. But SC couldn't get any closer.
Darrar added an assist on Dore's goal to finish with two points.
Carr made 40 saves for the game, including 15 in the first period to keep WNE's deficit at 1-0 after 20 minutes. Chris Tasiopoulos stopped 42 shots.
