Western New England defeats visiting Smith 18-14 in exciting non-conference contest

SPRINGFIELD, Mass. – Senior midfielder Katie Toomy (Northborough, MA) scored seven goals as the Western New England women's lacrosse team posted an exciting 18-14 non-conference victory over Smith College Saturday afternoon (March 10).

The Golden Bears evened their record at 2-2 after snapping a two-game skid. The Pioneers, who defeated Nichols 21-12 in their opener Thursday, are now 1-1.

Sophomore midfielder Kelsey Sherman (Buchanan, NY) added three goals while senior midfielder Megan Doyle (Putnam Valley, NY) had two goals and two assists for Western New England. Senior midfielder Liz McRoberts (Bourne, MA) and junior attacker Julianne Green (Brightwaters, NY) each chipped-in with two goals and an assist.

Western New England started strong jumping to an 8-1 lead on a goal by junior attacker Ali Pepe (North Reading, MA) with 6:38 left in the opening half, which capped a 6-0 run. Sherman netted her first goal with 14 seconds remaining as the Golden Bears took a 10-3 lead at halftime.

Smith rallied behind senior midfielder Meaghan Fileti (Palos Verdes Estates, CA) who fired in four of her team high seven goals in the second stanza.

The Pioneers got within four on three occasions, the last time at 13-9 when sophomore midfielder Becky Bracken (Barrington, RI) scored on a free position shot with 17:14 to play. McRoberts answered with a free position goal with 15:45 left, and then Toomy scored twice in 11 seconds with assists from Pepe to open a 17-10 margin with 14:23 remaining.

Freshman midfielder Jessica Scannapieco (Blue Bell, PA) contributed to the win by compiling 12 draw controls as the Golden Bears took a decisive 25-8 advantage in that category. Western New England held a slight 38-36 edge in shots.

Bracken finished with three goals and two assists while senior attacker MK Pasini (Columbus, OH) notched a pair of scores. She also had four draw controls and two ground balls. Fileti picked-up four ground balls and had two caused turnovers.

McRoberts had a fine all-around performance with three caused turnovers, three draw controls, and three ground balls.

Western New England freshman goalie Emily Castleman (Wilbraham, MA) played well making 14 saves, including several nice stops in the second half. Junior Alina Pechacek (Andover, MA) had 11 saves for the Pioneers.

The Golden Bears, who played their opening four games in seven days, start a four-game road trip at Castleton (Vermont) on Tuesday (March 13).
