LAKELAND, Fla. – Freshman designated
Joe Coyne (Duxbury, MA) had three hits and a pair of runs-batted-in to lead the St. Joseph's (ME) baseball team to a 9-4 victory over No. 18 Western New England Saturday (March 17) at Lake Bonny Park.
Junior second baseman
Brandon Chase (Naples, ME) and senior shortstop
Dan Achorn (Bow, NH) each contributed a pair of hits and runs, and a RBI as the Monks improved their record to 8-1.
Western New England (3-2) took a 1-0 lead in the top of the first inning when junior center fielder
Casey Dadio (Branford, CT) singled, stole second, and came home on a RBI single by junior third baseman
Mike Rubino (Northford, CT).
The Monks scored twice in the bottom of the first when Coyne and sophomore left fielder
Alex Markakis (Lynnfield, MA) each drove in a run with singles.
The Golden Bears took a 4-2 lead in the second following a RBI double by junior left fielder
Taylor Perun (Plainville, CT), an error, and balk.
St. Joseph's scored a run in the fourth to cut the lead to one, and then went ahead for good by scoring three times in the fifth. Chase had a clutch two-out triple to give the Monks a 6-4 advantage.
Coyne had a run-scoring double and Achorn a RBI single to highlight a three-run seventh that stretched the lead to 9-4.
Sophomore
Lincoln Sanborn (Standish, ME) went the first six innings allowing four runs and five hits while striking out six and walking two. Sophomore
Joe Gruntkosky (Peabody, MA) gave up only one hit with a walk and four strikeouts in three innings for the save.
WNE junior second baseman
Tim Clark (West Springfield, MA) finished with two hits and scored a run. Junior
Kevin Jefferis (Cheshire, CT) lasted only four-and-a-third innings. He allowed five runs and eight hits with three walks and three strikeouts.
