RIT stops Western New England 15-9 in second round NCAA Division III contest

ROCHESTER, N.Y. – Freshman midfielder Kyle Aquin (Hamilton, ON) scored a goal in each quarter as No. 7 Rochester Institute of Technology defeated No. 15 Western New England 15-9 in a second round game of the NCAA Division III Men's Lacrosse Championship Saturday afternoon (May 12).

This was the ninth straight victory for the Tigers (16-2) who advance to No. 4 Tufts (17-2) in a national quarterfinal round game on Wednesday (May 16) in Medford, Massachusetts.

Leading 8-7 at halftime, RIT broke open a close game by outscoring Western New England 7-2 in the second half.

Senior attackers Tyler Russell (Livonia, NY) and A.J. Tingle (Cary, NC) each contributed two goals and an assist. Senior midfielder Jordan Collins-Hartwig (Buffalo, NY) also scored twice while sophomore midfielder Taylor Wisman (Seattle, WA) had a goal and four assists.

RIT scored just 19 seconds into the game on a goal by senior midfielder Alex Crepinsek (Oakville, ON) and went ahead 2-0 when Aquin found the net at the 10:16 mark.

Western New England bounced back tying the game on goals by sophomore midfielder Sean Lawton (Abington, MA) and junior James Reardon (Longmeadow, MA). The Tigers answered with two goals before senior attacker Patrick White (Milton, MA) tallied a goal with 26 second left to get the Golden Bears within 4-3 after the opening period.

Each squad scored four times in the second period starting when WNE junior attacker Corbett Corrigan Harreys (Essex, CT) tied the contest at 11:43. Sophomore attacker Adam Knapton (Canandaigua, NY) then gave the Golden Bears their only lead at 5-4 with a goal 9:33 before intermission.

Tingle, Aquin, and sophomore attacker Jack Krzyston (Bedford, NH) notched goals in a 3:29 span before senior midfielder Jonathan Roy (Lewiston, ME) cut the margin to 7-6 with 3:56 to play. Collins-Hartwig gave the hosts a two-goal advantage just 51 seconds later. Lawton scored at 1:34 as WNE trailed by only a goal at halftime.

RIT used goals by Wisman and senior midfielder Tom Riley (West Nyack, NY) to take a 10-7 lead with 6:12 left in the third stanza. Senior midfielder Andrew Mariani (East Brunswick, NJ) closed the margin to two at 3:44 , but Aquin scored again at 1:07 to give the Tigers an 11-8 lead after three quarters.

Russell, Aquin, Collins-Hartwig, and Tingle scored in the fourth quarter to give RIT a commanding 15-8 advantage.

Lawton fired-in his third goal of the goal with 1:56 to play to complete the scoring.

Reardon finished with a goal and two assists while White and Knapton each contributed an assist.

Senior midfielder Joe Martin (Springfield, MA) controlled only 11-of-24 faceoffs and picked-up 11 ground balls. Senior goalie Brewster Knowlton (Somers, CT) compiled 14 saves.

Sophomore Anthony DeLeo (Canandaigua, NY) stopped 11 shots for the Tigers. Sophomore midfielder Tyler Shaw (Tully, NY) won seven-of-eight faceoffs and Crepinsek had a team best seven ground balls.

Western New England had a slight advantage in shots (37-34) and ground balls (38-37), but committed 21 turnovers compared to 15 for RIT. The Golden Bears end their season with a successful 13-5 record.
