SPRINGFIELD, Mass.--The Western New England University men's soccer team could never get on track in a 3-0 season-opening loss Saturday at the hands of visiting Eastern Connecticut at Suprenant Field in the 2012 Soccer City Shootout. Merchant Marine edged Springfield, 1-0, in this afternoon's other semifinal game, setting up a championship date with Eastern Connecticut at 2:30 p.m. Sunday. Crosstown rivals Western New England and Springfield in square off in the third-place contest starting at noon. All four teams appeared in the NCAA Division III Tournament last season.

Mitch Power scored the only goal the Warriors would need just 3 minutes and 29 seconds after the opening kickoff against the Golden Bears, who are ranked No. 23 nationally in the preseason coaches' poll. Mike Radlbeck headed in an insurance goal in the 58th minute and Eastern Connecticut benefited from a WNE own goal three minutes later to seal the win.

Western New England thought it had tied the game at 1-all in the 26th minute, but the goal was waived off due to an infraction inside the penalty area following an officials' conference.

Merchant Marine was a winner against the Pride after Kyle Arestivo took a feed from Alex Maney for the game's lone goal in the 14th minute.
