WORCESTER, Mass.--Freshman
Chelsea Hayes scored the game-winning goal with 3 minutes and 52 seconds left in overtime to lift the Western New England University field hockey team to a wild 4-3 come-from-behind victory Tuesday at Worcester Polytechnic Institute. The Golden Bears extend their winning streak to two games and even their record at 2-2 on the season, while the Engineers fall to 1-3.
Hayes scored her first career goal on a rebound after teammate
Sarah Race took the first shot and a save was made by the WPI defense.
Race tied the game 1-1 in the 34th minute when she collected a loose ball in front of the crease and redirected a shot initially taken from 30 yards out.
Trailing 3-2 late in regulation, the Golden Bears forced the extra session on a goal with no time remaining on the clock. Western New England was awarded a penalty corner and kept play alive within the 5-meter circle, giving
Jaynie Mueller an opportunity to convert the tying goal after a mad scramble in front of the cage.
